OF THE HUNDREDS OF CANDIDATES WHO WILL APPEAR ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT IN PENNSYLVANIA, JUST FIVE ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH A POLITICAL PARTY.
One of those candidates is 50-year-old Jodi Borello, a former community organizer with the Center for Coalfield Justice, who is challenging state Sen. Camera Bartolotta (R., Washington) in the 46th District.
Bartolotta flipped this old bastion of blue-collar labor Democrats — think coal miners and millworkers — in 2014. Since then, she’s defeated occasional challenges from Democrats and, earlier this year, a Republican primary funded by the skill games lobby.
After the Democratic candidate dropped out in June, Borello collected the approximately 1,500 signatures needed to make the ballot. (Under state law, an unaffiliated candidate must get signatures equal to 2% of the largest vote cast for any officer, except judges, during the preceding election.)
